Study finds comparable outcomes in standalone and combined XEN45 Gel Stent implantation
A retrospective single-center study comparing standalone XEN45 Gel Stent implantation and combined surgery with phacoemulsification found comparable outcomes in terms of postoperative intraocular pressure (IOP), medication score, side effects, revision rate, repeat surgery rate, and overall success rate among phakic and pseudophakic patients.
Despite similar results, the study emphasized a noteworthy difference in the mean latency between primary stent implantation and the first revision surgery after combined surgery, which was notably shorter.
The study involved 180 eyes of 180 participants, with 60 eyes in each of the standalone phakic (phakic group), standalone pseudophakic (pseudophakic group), and combined surgery with phacoemulsification (combined group) categories.
After an average follow-up time of 20.6 ± 12.6 months, the study found a mean IOP reduction of 37% across the entire cohort. Comparative analysis among the 3 groups found no significant differences in postoperative IOP, postoperative medication score, side effects, revision rate, repeat surgery rate, or overall success rate.
A total of 8 eyes (4%) exhibited a dysfunctional stent during open conjunctival revision out of the 76 eyes that underwent the procedure.
